VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
by James J. Devine
Glenn Beck is not ‘awesome’ …He’s awkward. Glenn Beck is a small-minded, anti-American zealot who rejects facts and advocates fear & hate.
A drug addict who turned to Mormonism — a fantasy religion more ridiculous than most zany superstitions — Beck’s favorite authors include Alan Dershowitz, Adolf Hitler, and Friedrich Nietzsche.[Alexander Zaitchik (September 23, 2009). “Glenn Beck rises again: Getting clean, getting Mormon, getting talk radio — and going to Yale, with the help of Joe Lieberman”. Salon Magazine.]
Contending that the United States Constitution is divinely inspired, Beck rejects the science that global warming is man made. He wants to inject both hate and religion into public policy, contrary to real American values. He is the subject of the 2010 critical book Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance.
A dedicated conspiracy theorist, the nutjob contends that “Joseph McCarthy was absolutely right” in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Spewing hate and fear has been profitable, though. “Glenn Beck has managed to monetize virtually everything that comes out of his mouth” according to Forbes magazine.
Beck’s use of distorted, inflammatory rhetoric has made him a dangerous demagogue. Most people fail to undestand that Beck’s outrage and apocalyptic view is a comedy act, but it will be a bad joke when his doomsday plots manifest themselves.
Beck is the kind of guy who inspires people like Timothy McVeigh, the crazed conservative Republican who bombed the Oklahoma City federal building because he was deluded by anti-American hate.
