EDISON — From July 27 to August 8, Lian Cancryn of Plainfield, a junior at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in North Edison, attended the National Student Leadership Conference on Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of California at Berkeley. Cancryn’s love for writing led her to apply for the program. She originally expressed an interest in hard news reporting, but later opted to focus her studies during the program on music and entertainment journalism.
Professors, journalists, television reporters, anchors and producers rounded out a group of guest speakers who helped Cancryn sharpen her interests. She learned how to interview individuals in order to write exclusive media stories. She also learned about the “business side of writing and how to write about music bands” from a professor who works in the entertainment industry. Coursework included studies of ethics in journalism, newspapers to blogs, the art of interviewing, international press, and how to pitch story ideas and write leads.
Lian is the daughter of Wayne and Dawn Cancryn of Plainfield.
