PERTH AMBOY – Home schooled children are invited to partake in a new and innovative theater and dance program being held at City Dance Academy in Perth Amboy. Beginning this November, the school will offer “Dance Like MJ” and “Musical Theater 101” at times that are convenient for home-schoolers and stay at home parents.
The courses are designed to complement physical education and fine arts curriculums and require no previous dance or performance ability. Additionally, students who participate in either of the six-week courses will receive a certificate of completion on the last day of class.
“Dance Like MJ” will be held on Tuesdays (Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and Dec. 7) from 11 a.m. – noon for ages 5 – 12 and from 12:30– 1:45 p.m. for ages 13+. The course will teach students fundamental exercise and dance techniques as well as some of Michael Jackson’s signature choreography from videos such as Bad, Remember the Time, Smooth Criminal, and Thriller. “Dance Like MJ” will be taught by veteran choreographer and dancer Kenny Still, who performed with Michael in Bad, the classic short film/video directed by Martin Scorsese.
“Musical Theater 101” will run on Wednesdays (Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24 and Dec. 1, 8) from 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m. for ages 5-12 and 1:30 – 3 p.m. for ages 13+. The class will cover acting, singing, dancing, as well as performance techniques for the stage. “Musical Theater 101” will be taught by esteemed choreographer Jamal Graves.
Graves has choreographed several Broadway productions, numerous music videos, international tours, television commercials, and motion films. His additional honors include MTV & BET Choreographer of The Year, the Smithsonian Institute Award, Peabody Award, and numerous American Music, Billboard, and Platinum Artist Awards.
Each of the six week classes are $60 per person. Students may also take individual classes for $12 per class. Pre registration is suggested.
