ELIZABETH — Bridgeway has scheduled its tenth annual Walk for Independence to take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, according to Danielle Menture, president of the board of trustees. This year’s walk is slated for the TD Bank Ball Park in Bridgewater, home of the Somerset Patriots ball club. Registration begins at noon. The 2.5 mile walk starts at 12:30 p.m. More than 300 participants are expected to take part in the event.
The walk benefits Bridgeway’s Assistance Fund helping individuals who are experiencing mental illness to achieve recovery goals and live as independently as possible. The fund provides funds to pay for apartment and utility security deposits, moving expenses, initial purchases to outfit permanent living situations, registration fees and expenses for workshops and classes, interview outfits for individuals seeking employment, emergency purchases and expenses, prescription medication purchases not covered by insurance, and loans to tide someone over until permanent income is more secure.
The walk follows Bridgeway’s wellness initiative by providing a healthy activity. Statistics prove that individuals who have mental illness face additional medical conditions that shorten their life expectancy including heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Bridgeway is among those mental health services that are increasing their focus on wellness for people receiving services. Healthy diet, exercise and life-style choices are part of the service focus. The Walk provides a health-promoting opportunity.
For 40 years, Bridgeway, a non-profit mental health services agency located in Elizabeth, has provided services to Central and Northern New Jersey adults in eight counties who are experiencing the difficulties of mental illness. Bridgeway’s recovery-centered support services assist people to live as independently as possible, learn and work in the community, and improve their quality of life.
Bridgeway is still accepting sponsorships at all levels including vendor table sponsors and pre-registration for walkers.
