Elizabeth Man Pleads Guilty To 2007 Homicide

ELIZABETH — An Elizabeth man pleaded guilty in Superior Court yesterday for his role in the December 2007 death of a neighbor, according to Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

Darnell Westbrook, 43, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, said Assistant Prosecutor Ann Luvera, who prosecuted the case.

According to the investigation, Westbrook and the victim, Angel Benitez, had an argument inside an apartment building on Grove Street in Elizabeth where the two lived, said Luvera. In court, Westbrook admitted that he hit the victim with a pipe and strangled the man. Westbrook did not reveal what the pair had argued about.

Westbrook faces 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 8, 2011.
