Voice of the People: Impeach Christie

By James Devine

President Bill Clinton faced impeachment because he had oral sex, but Gov. Christie blew nearly a half-billion dollars and Trenton Democrats have not even used the “I” word.

What do you have to do to get fired, except be a Democrat who won an election?

Christie lost $400 million in federal education funds because his administration screwed up a grant application after it had been completed properly in cooperation with the state teacher’s union.

A political tantrum by Christie cost New Jersey taxpayers $400 million and nobody has raised the specter of holding him directly accountable.

Christie’s predecessor was so bad, I could not vote to give him a second term and as a patriotic American, I never want a Republican to be elected; but Christie’s job performance makes Gov. Jon Corzine look like the wizard of Wall Street.

Nearly half-a-billion dollars would have paid for a lot of benefits to society, and that’s why we have government.

Government exists to benefit society by securing justice, liberty, opportunity and equality.

Republicans think there is something wrong with government and they have been aiming to destroy the institution for 30 years.

Christie’s incompetence surely justifies the public’s frustration with government and plenty of other examples of waste, fraud and abuse underscore its many imperfections.

Unfortunately, there is no better way to get the things we need because anarchy and lawlessness are worse.

Government is what sends help when you dial 9-1-1 and protects your children from poison and allows an individual to get a fair shake in court, even up against the largest corporation in the world.

The free market does not produce justice or freedom or equality, and in fact it is a natural adversary to those ideals.

With all its flaws, government is good and despite what you heard in the movies, greed is not. Republicans just don’t understand that.

That’s why Christie’s failure to secure $400 million might not have been a case of incompetence but an intentional act meant to cause the destruction of government itself.

Republican incompetence and malfeasance are equally dangerous, so it begs the question: Why are Democratic lawmakers not pursuing his impeachment?
