“…all his petty ways…”

He stood up against the record industry…He stood up against radio stations…He stood next to his heroes…He stood by his music…

This is Tom Petty, and this and more can be found in a new four-hour long documentary titled “Runnin’ Down A Dream”, a unique inside look at the inside of a very unique man…

And, while all of it was interesting, several things hit home, and stood out for me…

[smartads]

While talking about songwriting, he says…”…I don’t understand it, but I do know that, it seems that the best ones often just appear…like, you’re sitting with your guitar or piano, and bang—there it is…it just falls out of the sky…I hesitate to even try to understand it, for fear that it might make it go away…it’s a spiritual thing…”

And…when talking about recording with his band, The Heartbreakers, he says that they recorded every album together, in one room, all at the same time…except for one album, where the producer wanted each of them to individually record their pieces…and it didn’t work…

No one had fun…no track sounded as cohesive as it should have…and they never did it again…

“We Are All One”…he said…and it shows in this brilliant, honest look at a band, where one leader may have the name…

…but every member has a voice…
