Gone Fishin’ On A Lazy Summer Afternoon

September 3, 2010

FISHING WITH GRANDPA…on a warm summer’s day.  After picking out just the right shady spot under a tree at Union County’s Echo Lake Park in Mountainside, Ken Kennedy relaxes—in between baiting hooks—for his grandsons, Patrick, 5, and Steven Miller, 7.  The lake has been a favorite fishing spot for Kennedy, who lived in Union for 40 years before moving to Colonia, near his grandchildren.   “There’s a nice breeze and it’s shady,” Kennedy said.   Last week, he brought his grandsons to the lake three times, where they caught 14 fish, mostly catfish and sunnys, he said.

THEY CAUGHT ONE…in the lake at Union County’s Nomahegan Park, although it was so small it had to be thrown back in.  Larry Hart, of Cranford brought his son, Ethan, 9, and daughter, Maddie, 12, to go fishing at the lake.  They usually have better luck on the other side, Hart said, but because the sun was just so hot, they opted for a spot where they could fish in the shade.  Hart said they have been making the rounds of the county’s various lakes and ponds this summer, but so far the biggest score was a trout reeled in from the Rahway River.
