Lakewood Earns 13th Walk-Off Win

LAKEWOOD, NJ – With Sebastian Valle on the disabled list, backup catcher Kyle Lafrenz got the start Monday night against the Augusta GreenJackets, and he wasted no time making his presence felt.

With the winning run on third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Lafrenz scalded a grounder that just eluded the grasp of shortstop Ydwin Villegas to clinch a 3-2 Lakewood win.

It is the BlueClaws’ 13th walk-off win this season. The Claws (37-25) actually almost won the game a bit earlier in the ninth against GreenJackets reliever Chris Wilson (0-2). With one out Leandro Castro walked, and Michael Dabbs followed with a deep fly ball to right-center that one-hopped the wall. On the way down, however, the ball landed on top of the wall and rolled along the edge before getting stuck, limiting Dabbs to a ground rule double and keeping Castro at third.

Anthony Hewitt then struck out before Lafrenz ended the ballgame with his walk-off single.

The bullpen got the job done for the BlueClaws. Reliever Mike Bolsenbroek gave up two runs on five hits through four innings in his first start of the season, striking out four. Kyle Carr chipped in two scoreless innings, and Eric Massingham (5-2) threw three one-hit innings to get the win.

Augusta (33-28) tallied the first two runs of the game early. Tommy Joseph hit an RBI double in the second, and Ryan Cavan belted his 16th home run of the season on the first pitch of the fourth off Bolsenbroek for a 2-0 GreenJackets lead.

Lakewood answered in the seventh against Jackets starter Kelvin Marte. Jonathan Singleton hit a leadoff double, Stephen Batts walked, and Leandro Castro laid a perfect bunt down the third baseline to load the bases with no outs.

Michael Dabbs followed by hitting a sac-fly to score Singleton and chase Marte. Anthony Hewitt then lined a ball fair down the third baseline off Wilson to tie the game at two.

Tuesday night at 7:05 pm RHP Brody Colvin (6-7, 3.28) will face Jackets RHP Andrew Reichard (4-1, 3.50).
