NJDOT Announces Railroad Crossing Repairs On Washington Road In Sayreville

TRENTON — The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced Monday that a portion of Washington Road (CR 535) in Sayreville will be temporarily closed order to remove a Conrail railroad grade crossing.

Washington Road will be closed at the railroad crossing east of Deerfield Road on Wednesday night, Aug. 25 from 6 p.m. to around 6 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26.

The following detours will be implemented during the Washington Road closure:

  • Eastbound motorists will use South Minnisink Avenue to Cheesequake Road to Bordentown Avenue (CR 615) to Ernston Road (CR 673) to Washington Avenue.
  • Westbound motorists will use Ernston Road to Bordentown Avenue to Cheesequake Road to South Minnisink Avenue back to Washington Road.

In order to provide a safer and smoother crossing on Washington Road, NJDOT will remove the existing crossing and repave the asphalt roadway approaches. The cost of the work is $50,000.

This project is part of NJDOT’s ongoing railroad grade-crossing safety program, which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year.
