LINDEN — The only fight night in Linden this year will be held on Friday, Oct. 8, Linden Boxing Association President Alfred A. Volpe announced. That’s when the Linden Boxing Association, in conjunction with the Linden Public Property and Community Services Department will present the 77th Annual New Jersey State Finals of the Diamond Gloves Boxing Tournament.

The full night of championship boxing entertainment is being sponsored by the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery and will be held at the Linden High School Gymnasium, located at 121 W. St. Georges Avenue.  The first fight is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

According to Linden Boxing Association founder  Tony Orlando, “This is the eleventh consecutive year that we are hosting the Diamond Glove Tournament State Finals here in Linden and also the eleventh consecutive year that our friends from the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery are sponsoring the event.  Without their sponsorship, we wouldn’t be able to have this successful night of amateur boxing that annually supports, through its proceeds, a varied amount of programs for our city’s youth.”

This year, the Linden Boxing Association will be honoring Michael Karlovich, the manager of strategic communication at Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery in Linden, for his exceptional commitment to the sport of boxing and the youth of Linden throughout the past eleven years. During this time, the Linden Boxing Association has donated in excess of $329,000 to Linden recreation-supported youth programs and has sponsored three scholarships annually for graduating Linden High School students.

Expected to be in attendance at this year’s championship bouts are former World Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight Champion Bobby Czyz; former World Welterweight, Junior Middleweight and Middleweight Champion Emile Griffith; former heavyweight contender Chuck Wepner, and Hall of Fame boxing trainer and manager Lou Duva.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Linden Community Center Building on 605 S. Wood Avenue, until Oct. 7.  For further information on the Diamond Glove Finals, call the Linden Department of Public Property and Community Services at 1-908-474-8600.
