MIDDLESEX COUNTY — The rain held off, as did the rally from Team 101.5 FM, and Team Vitale claimed victory in the Aug. 12 summer classic. For the 13th consecutive summer, state Sen Joseph Vitale and the Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce competed with 101.5 FM’s “The Jersey Guys” in an entertaining charity softball game to benefit the Middlesex County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

This year’s game featured a figurative “power outage” as both teams failed to provide the offense we have come to expect. Ultimately, Team Vitale prevailed scoring 13 runs to Team 101.5 FM’s 7. Leading the way for Team Vitale was Plainfield’s own Charles “Buddha” Ford, who smashed two three-run homeruns early on. Buddha’s offensive and defensive plays earned him Team Vitale’s Most Valuable Player of the game award. Veteran Farlan Alusick and rookie Mike Harris provided Team Vitale insurance with a pair of solo homeruns.

After falling behind 8 -0 in the first two innings, Team 101.5 FM proved its resilience as the game wore on. As a team, they scattered 16 hits over seven innings, but failed to capitalize on several run-scoring opportunities. Team 101.5 FM’s Most Valuable Player award winner, Matt McCount, led several 101.5 FM players with two hits, including a solo homerun in the decisive seventh inning.

While both teams failed to produce offensively, they both excelled defensively with several timely and spectacular defensive plays by both third basemen and the entire outfield. In fact, the game screeched to a halt with an impressive, game-ending double play. Woodbridge Township residents can catch the game on Local Access Channel 35 on August 19 at either the 9:30 AM or 2:30 PM time slot.

The real winner of course was the Middlesex County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In total, $4,545 was raised for this great cause. Donations to the “Middlesex County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity” can be mailed c/o the Office of Senator Joe Vitale, 569 Rahway Avenue, Woodbridge, NJ 07095. Vitale thanks all participants for making the softball game a great success.
