Applications Now Being Accepted For The Dana Christmas Scholarship For Heroism

TRENTON – The New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) announced Wednesday that applications for the Dana Christmas Scholarship for Heroism are now being accepted for 2011.

The scholarship is named for Dana Christmas, who at great personal risk to herself, saved many students from harm when a fire broke out in her dormitory at Seton Hall in 2000. Awarded annually in the amount of $10,000, subject to available funding, the scholarship recognizes up to five students for their acts of heroism.

“Dana was the first recipient of the scholarship and there have been more than 40 others honored for their acts of heroism since its inception in 2001,” said Michael Angulo, executive director of HESAA. “These young people acted bravely, despite the risk to themselves during situations that most of us hope to never encounter.”

Candidates for the scholarship must be nominated and an application must be submitted on their behalf describing the act. Students must have been 21 years or younger at the time of the act and at the time of the application. The application deadline for 2011 is Oct. 15, at which time all applications are reviewed to determine which applicants meet the spirit of the scholarship through having acted in an extraordinary way at great risk to their own personal safety to benefit the lives of others. Students must meet citizenship and selective service requirements in order to be considered.

This year’s recipients were honored in a ceremony co-sponsored by HESAA and the Public Service Enterprise Group Foundation. The event was attended by family members, members of the press and Dana Christmas. While the event recognized the recipients, it also celebrated the generosity of the PSEG Foundation making this year’s awards possible.

“The world is full of heroes,” said Angulo, “but some, including PSEG and our five recipients deserve our special thanks.”
