UNION COUNTY–By the end of 2010, it is estimated that in Union County alone, fifty-three people are diagnosed each week with cancer, totaling 2756 individuals annually, right here in our own community. This staggering figure was seen as a call to action by a group of friends who call themselves “Kiss Away Cancer”.
Over the past seven years, Kiss Away Cancer has risen to the level of “Flagship Team” by collectively raising over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society, a portion of which goes directly to patient services within Union County. The remainder of the funds go to cancer prevention, disease control, medical research, and advocacy efforts to insure that everyone has equal access to health care.
Not only does the team fight the disease through fundraising efforts, they educate the public regarding programs and services available through the American Cancer Society, thereby making a significant difference in the fight against cancer within their own community.
From September-November, Kiss Away Cancer has set up three fundraisers with hopes of raising $10,000 by the end of 2010.
To kick off the fundraisers, a Gold Party and Vendor Fair will be held on Sept. 16 from 6-9 p.m. The event will be held in the Clark Municipal Building Cafeteria, 430 Westfield Avenue. Anyone can trade-in gold and receive a cash payment on the spot! The first fifteen people to trade in at least $200 worth of gold will receive a deluxe gift. Nearly a dozen vendors, ranging from jewelry and deluxe handbags to Tupperware and Discovery Toys, will also be present. The first one hundred people to purchase $50 worth of products from any single vendor will receive a free gift bag. Light refreshments will be provided for free all night.
On Thursday, Oct. 21, the team has organized a bus trip to see the Broadway show, “Million Dollar Quarter”, the new smash-hit musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. Cost per ticket is $125, which includes orchestra seating, transportation, and food. Show time is at 8 p.m. The bus will depart from the Township of Clark.
On Saturday, Nov. 13, the “Fabulous 50s Dance” will tentatively take place at Rahway American Legion Post #5, 581 Maple Avenue. The event will run from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and will include dinner and dessert (Cash bar—cheap drinks all night!), and will feature the live oldies band “Remember When”. Attendees can also take part in a tricky tray auction, 50/50, door prizes, and more.
