RAHWAY – Rahway’s fire department has shrunk from 55 to 50 members this year, with another firefighter to retire this month. Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association #33 President Charles Leone expressed concerns about safety in light of the reductions.
Rahway Mayor James Kennedy said that he would consider adding two firefighters if the union made salary concessions.
Rahway’s budget for the current fiscal year increased by $2 million, and city officials blamed the added costs on increases in health insurance and pensions for city employees.
