LAKEWOOD – Ty Kelly’s RBI double down the first base line in the eighth was the difference Thursday night, as the Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 2-1 in the first of a five-game series.
The BlueClaws (27-18) scored 27 runs on 31 hits in their last two games coming into Thursday night’s matchup, but went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven.
Delmarva took an early lead in the first. Brian Conley doubled off Claws starter Brody Colvin, and Kieron Pope reached on an error by third baseman Stephen Batts to bring in Conley and give the Birds a 1-0 edge.
Colvin was outstanding from there on out, letting up just two hits and an unearned run in five innings. He also struck out six.
Lakewood drew even in the fifth. Keoni Ruth hit a leadoff double, and Leandro Castro delivered a two-out RBI single.
The game stayed tied until Kelly’s RBI double in the eighth. Will Startup retired the next six batters he faced for his first save and reliever Aaron Swenson (1-0) got the win in his second appearance of the season.
Ebelin Lugo (5-2) allowed the go-ahead run and took the loss.
Friday night at 7:05 pm RHP Trevor May (4-2, 2.85) goes up against RHP Kenny Moreland (7-5, 3.16).
