GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Drive rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth Tuesday afternoon to beat the BlueClaws 3-2 and snap a six-game losing streak.
Reliever Mike McGuire started the inning by giving up a double to Derrik Gibson, a walk to Ronald Bermudez, and throwing a pickoff try into centerfield to move Gibson to third.
Luke Wertz (4-2) then came into the game and didn’t fare much better. Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled in a run, Michael Almanzar grounded out to third plating a run, and Reymond Fuentes singled to plate the go-ahead run.
Armando Zerpa (1-0) threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win, while Dennis Neuman picked up his 11th save.
With an Asheville loss to Hickory Tuesday the Drive would move back into a tie for first in the Southern Division.
With two outs in the fourth and Jonathan Singleton on first with a single, the Claws drew first blood as Sebastian Valle belted his team-leading thirteenth home run of the season and second in as many days, putting the Claws up 2-0.
Starter Josh Zeid found himself in a couple tight spots, but worked his way through six scoreless innings, striking out five.
The Drive picked up four hits against the righty through the first two innings, but only managed one over the next four.
Wednesday at 7:00 pm RHP Colby Shreve (6-5, 3.69) will get the start for Lakewood.
