Camp Cool Environment at the EARTH Center

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — On Thursday, July 22, students from Camp Cool Environment visited the EARTH Center, home to Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County. They were given a tour of the various Master Gardeners demonstration gardens and taught about planting and composting by Agricultural Program Associate, Richard Weidman.

“Camp Cool Environment” is organized by Who Is My Neighbor? Inc., a non-profit agency located in Highland Park. The camp is for students entering grades 3-6 and focuses on the environment, nature, and science. “Camp Cool Environment’s” goal is to provide youth with opportunities to experience nature and learn in fun, engaging ways.

Says camp director, Nessa Rosenstein, “I think that the EARTH Center was a great place for our campers to visit. They really enjoyed the hands-on activities such as walking through the butterfly garden, trying to catch insects at the pond, and planting strawberries The campers talked about our trip to the EARTH Center for many days after!”

Other locations related to the environment that the campers have visited are their local recycling center, and the Edgeboro Landfill. In addition, the campers do various gardening activities and make crafts out of recycled materials. Campers are fully immersed in the topics thorough a hands-on approach to the material.
