Bears Fall To Barnstormers, 12-5

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Lancaster Barnstormers used a seven-run second inning to defeat the Newark Bears 12-5 on Monday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Lancaster sent ten batters to plate in the second inning against Bears’ starter Matt Smith and brought home seven runs on four hits to jump out to an early 7-0 lead. Jason Perry’s two-run double and a two-run shot off the bat of Aaron Herr were the big blows of the frame.


Jose Sanchez used a pair of double plays to set down the Bears through his first two innings. Newark cracked the scoreboard and broke the shutout in the visitor’s third as Kennard Jones plated Gabe Suarez with a RBI single on his 103rd hit of the season to make it 7-1. Carl Everett collected his sixth homer of the season with a solo shot to right in the fifth to bring Newark within five runs. Lancaster answered back in the home half as Lloyd Turner ripped a two-run double and the lead grew back to seven runs and it was 9-2.

The Bears edged closer in the very next frame after Elijah Dukes reached on a one-out double and Daryle Ward walked to put two on. Brian Barton drilled a RBI single up the middle to plate Dukes. Everett recorded his second-straight multi-RBI effort with a RBI double followed by a RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Manny Mejia and the Bears were within four. The Barnstormers came back in the home half of the eighth, sending batters to the plate and adding three more runs to push the lead back to seven.

Sanchez (3-8) recorded the win, surrendering five earned runs and seven hits, with five strikeouts over five and one-third innings. Smith (6-9) was dealt the loss, tossing just two and one-third innings, allowing seven earned runs and six hits, with four walks.

The Bears and Barnstormers continue the series on Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Fans can catch all the action on as David Greenwald provides the play-by-play. Newark is back home on Tuesday, August 3 to kick-off a six-game home stand against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is 11:05 a.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 10:05 a.m. as part of the “Camp Day” festivities.
