SUMMIT — Authorities arrested a third teenager and charged him with manslaughter in the death of a 47-year-old Summit man on Friday, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow announced.
Following an investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force, police arrested Nigel Dumas, 19, of Morristown, for his role in the attack. He was arrested around 7:20 p.m. on July 23 in Morristown and was being held in the Union County Jail on $100,000 bail.
Dumas is the third teenager to be arrested in connection with the death of Abelino Mazaniego. According to the investigation, the victim was on a bench in the promenade off of Springfield Avenue in Summit on July 17 around 9:25 p.m. when he was approached by a group of teenagers, said Romankow. Authorities said that the teenagers, who facilitated the attack, caused serious injury to Mazaniego.
Officials believe the attack was unprovoked attack, though the case remains under investigation. The victim was transported to Overlook Hospital and died on Tuesday afternoon, having never regained consciousness, said Romankow.
Two suspects, teenagers from Summit, were identified and arrested earlier last week in connection with the case. Eighteen-year-old Khayri Williams-Clark and a 17-year-old were taken into custody and are being held in Union County.
The identity of the 17-year-old has not been released because of his age.
Williams-Clark is being held on $100,000 bail.
Investigators continue to gather and examine evidence in this case and continue to take witness statements, authorities said.
