SALISBURY, MD – After an hour and a half rain delay ended each starter’s night early, the Shorebirds won a battle of the bullpens 3-1 Sunday night.

The downpour started at the beginning of the bottom of the second, forcing starters Josh Zeid and Matt Hobgood out of the game.

Kevin Landry (2-0) and Nick Haughian combined to keep the Claws bats in check from there on out, limiting Lakewood (18-11) to sveen hits and a run in the next six innings. Brian Parker threw a hitless ninth for his second save.

Delmarva (15-14) got on the board first in the third inning on a Brian Conley solo shot. They took a 2-0 lead in the fifth after Conley walked to start the inning, stole second, and scored on a Mike Flacco base hit.

Flacco, the brother of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI in his 2010 Birds debut. He was recalled from Aberdeen in the New York-Penn League earlier in the day.

The BlueClaws got within a run in the sixth. Jonathan Villar slapped a leadoff single, and with two outs came in on a Michael Dabbs base hit.

Delmarva’s bullpen didn’t allow the Claws to get any closer, and Gary Helmick added an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth when he reached on a wild pitch after a swinging strike three. He then stole second, and scored on a Villar error to push the Birds ahead 3-1.

Mike McGuire (0-1) took the loss, despite letting up just three runs (two earned) in five innings. He also struck out seven in relief of Zeid.

Monday at 6:05 pm RHP Brody Colvin (5-6, 3.50) faces RHP Brent Allar (2-1, 4.82) in the first game of a doubleheader. Game two starters are TBA.
