12 Jersey Natives To Play In Weekend Golf Championship

CHESTERFIELD — The 42nd Trusted Choice® Big “I” National Championship will return to Chesterfield for the second time. Old York Country Club will host 156 of the nation’s top junior golfers for the 72-hole stroke-play event held July 27-30. The tournament field boasts 12 New Jersey natives.

The 2009 Boys Division champion is returning to make another run for the title. Seventeen-year-old Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md., finished on top of the competition last year after placing ninth in 2008. Ranked sixth nationally, McCarthy’s resume includes advancement to match play in the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and second-place finish at the American Junior Golf Association Thunderbird International Junior in May.

Also highlighting the Boys Division is 18-year-old Patrick Fishburn of Ogden, Utah., who holds the record for the lowest single round in event history. Fishburn shot 63 in the second round of last year’s Trusted Choice® Big “I” National Championship.

Local talent in the Boys Division includes Thomas Barnes of Oradell (River Dell High School), Charles Cai of West Windsor (West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North), Sean Elliott of Westfield (Westfield High School), and Ethan Wall of Brielle (Christian Brothers Academy).

In the Girls Division, the Trusted Choice® Big “I” National Championship will host professional golfer and sportscaster Jim Gallagher’s daughter Mary Langdon Gallagher of Greenwood, Miss. The Girls Division contains several nationally ranked players including Ally McDonald of Fulton, Miss., Kayli Quinton of Cypress, Texas, and Mattie Tobey of Denver, N.C. Also ranked nationally are Alyssa Shimel of Perrysburg, Ohio, who has signed a National Letter of Intent with Michigan and twins Jenny and Kristin Coleman of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., who will continue their careers at Colorado.

The host state is represented in the Girls Division by Alice Chen of Princeton, Alexandra Hershberger of Basking Ridge and Kuriko Tsukiyama of Bogota.

The tournament practice rounds will take place Sunday, July 25 and Monday, July 26. First- and second-round tee times will be off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Following the second round, the field will be a cut to the low 54 boys and 27 girls including ties. Third- and final-round tee times will be at 7:30 am off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees Thursday, July 29 and Friday, July 30. An awards ceremony will immediately follow final-round play.

Renowned as the nation’s largest junior stroke-play golf tournament, the Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship is one of the premier junior golf events; attracting 156 leading junior golfers from thirty-five states. Previous participants include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Kellee Booth, and Candie Kung.
