SUMMIT — Two teenagers have been charged with manslaughter following the death of a 47-year-old Summit man, said Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow and Summit Police Chief Robert C. Lucid.
The victim was on a bench in the promenade off of Springfield Avenue on Saturday, July 17, at around 9:30 p.m. when he was approached by a group of teenagers, said Romankow.
According to the investigation, the two teens facilitated the attack, said Romankow, causing serious injury. It appears to be an unprovoked attack, officials said, although the case remains under investigation.
Police were called to the scene soon after the attack where they discovered Abelino Mazaniego of Summit suffering from severe head trauma. He was transported to Overlook Hospital where he died on Tuesday afternoon, having never regained consciousness, said Romankow.
An investigation by the Summit Police Department and the Union County Homicide Taskforce identified two suspects, teenagers from Summit. Eighteen-year-old Khayri Williams-Clark and a 17-year-old were arrested Wednesday afternoon and are being held in Union County. The identity of the 17-year-old is not available because of his age, officials said.
The attack was recorded by a teenager who was present during the assault, but who has not been charged, said Romankow. Authorities believe that the video has been circulated among teenagers in Summit.
Officials are asking anyone with information regarding the attack to contact Homicide Task Force Detective Patrick Bradley at (908) 527-4152 or Summit Police Department Sgt. Michael Rabasca (908) 277-9389.
