CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 5-4 on Tuesday night at Suffolk County Sports Park in Central Islip, New York.
It was all about the long ball at Suffolk County Sports Park on Tuesday as all nine runs were plated on six homers.
Mike Loree and Daryl Harang appeared locked in a pitcher’s duel early as they combined for two scoreless innings to start the game. Loree stranded five runners and allowed just three hits and Harang retired five straight in his first two frames. Elijah Dukes changed that as he lined a three-run home run to left in the top of the third to give Newark an early 3-0 lead. John Rodriguez wasted little time as he put the Ducks on the scoreboard with a shot out to right and it was 3-1.
Both pitchers settled down as Loree scattered just two more hits and left five more ducks on the pond in his final three innings. Harang matched him setting down eleven straight following the Dukes’ blast.
Manny Mejia padded the Bears’ lead in the seventh as he drilled a solo shot to the hitter’s eye in center field and gave Newark a three run cushion. Long Island again answered back in the home half. Javier Colina took the first pitch he saw from reliever Greg Reinhard out to left to bring the Ducks back within a pair. After a Johnny Hernandez walk, Matt Esquivel bombed a two-run shot over the 400 foot mark of the hitter’s eye in right-center and the game was tied 4-4.
Newark had its chance in the eight against Bill Simas. Brian Barton doubled followed by walks to Daryle Ward and Mejia loaded the bases. Simas got out of the inning as he induced a 1-2-3 double play off the bat of Carl Everett. With the game still tied heading into the bottom of the ninth, Esquivel gave the Ducks the win with a walk-off solo home run to left field.
Ricardo Gomez (2-0) got the win as he tossed the ninth, surrendering a ground rule double, with a strikeout. Reinhard (2-3) was dealt the loss, allowing four runs on five hits, with a walk and a strikeout over two and one-third innings.
Newark closes out the road trip against Long Island Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at Suffolk County Sports Park. Fans can tune into all the action on www.newarkbears.com as David Greenwald provides the play-by-play.
