LAKEWOOD – The Delmarva Shorebirds took an early lead and didn’t look back Sunday evening, beating the BlueClaws 7-2.
Delmarva (8-9) plated the winning run in the first against Lakewood starter Trevor May (1-1). Steve Bumbry drew a bases loaded walk, and Levi Carolus doubled in two to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead.
May threw 34 pitches in that inning but managed to make it through five, letting up the three runs, walking three, and striking out nine.
Lakewood (12-5) picked up a run in the fourth when Jiwan James reached on a throwing error by pitcher Matt Hobgood. Right fielder Brian Conley then misfired from right to let James advance to third. He scored on a sac-fly by Leandro Castro to cut the deficit to two.
James went 2-for-4 on the night to extend his hit streak to 19 games, two off the team record.
Delmarva pushed their lead to 4-1 on a Tyler Townsend RBI double in the sixth, but the Claws again cut the deficit to two in the bottom half of the inning when James was picked off trying to steal second, allowing Jonathan Villar to score from third.
That was as close as the BlueClaws would get. The Birds added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to seal a decisive 7-2 win.
Monday morning (11:05 am) RHP Jonathan Pettibone (3-3, 4.48) against RHP Luis Noel (4-2, 2.59).
