Sharing The Spirit

While you may be familiar with the HAP Autism Awareness campaign sponsored each year by Work Smarter Now, I am writing to you today as a member of the Holiday Express community. We are in the middle one of the hottest summers in many years, but in a few months Holiday Express will be sharing the Christmas spirit, delivering music, food, gifts, support, and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness during the Holiday season.

Because gifts like wool hats, winter gloves, and fleece blankets are on our ‘hard to get’ list, I am writing to you to keep Holiday Express in mind before the cooler weather officially moves in. Contributions are one of the biggest parts of this organization; and, without help from individuals and organizations, none of this would be possible. At every place we visit, everyone in attendance receives a gift bag from us. Event Managers confer in advance with the contact at each facility and pass along suggestions to the Warehouse Elves, and the contents of each gift bag are carefully thought out to match the needs of the individuals. The Warehouse Elves then work extremely hard to make sure all 15,000+ bags get packed with loving care.

Gift bags often include toiletries such shampoo, soap, lotion, lip balm and a washcloth; or a toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, and deodorant. These personal care items are put into a clear plastic bag and tied with a festive, colorful ribbon. As you can imagine, making over 10,000 bags takes a lot of time! Clothing items are just as important to our clients; and in some gift bags, we include blankets, gloves, scarves, socks, slippers, T-shirts, and even baseball hats. Of course, besides receiving the necessities, our clients need to have some fun as well, like beanie babies, coloring books, crayons, pens, pads of paper, playing cards, reading books, wallets, change purses, and naturally, stuffed animals. These items are placed into either a duffel or tote bag, or for the children, a backpack; and sometimes in a special Holiday Express drawstring bag.

Since I was unable to sponsor this year’s HAP Autism Awareness Campaign because of family needs, I am sponsoring a Holiday Express donation campaign, Sharing The Spirit, starting this summer and running through November 2010. I am reaching out to all Work Smarter Now business associates, clients, contacts, and friends in the community, for their help in Sharing The Spirit. If your work is in education, maybe it will be contributing extra crayons or pads of paper. If your work is in a retail store, maybe gloves and hats that are hard to find. Or if you work in a business with direct clients, maybe you can run a Sharing The Spirit drive to collect individual items like blankets or T-shirts.

Please feel confident that you are helping those in need. Your contributions may be mailed or delivered directly to Holiday Express.
