STATE — Berkeley College declared June 11 Community Service Day and closed all seven campuses as well as Berkeley College Online. Instead of reporting to work, 530 faculty and staff volunteered at 44 diverse community service organizations in New Jersey and New York. At the end of the day associates had served a total of 2,500 hours.
“Serving lunch with my team at the Hoboken Shelter, I was humbled by the gratitude and dignity of our homeless guests,” says Berkeley College President Dario A. Cortes, PhD, who worked at the shelter with 11 associates.
Berkeley College has a long tradition of serving organizations in the local and global community. The Berkeley College Charity Car Show, held at the Bergen Campus in Paramus, last fall, raised more than $18,000 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. And earlier this year, Berkeley College donated more than $16,000 toward relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that hit the nation in January.
Community Service Day gave associates an opportunity to provide hands-on help. In Union County, volunteers sorted and repacked food for distribution to more than 500,000 low-income families at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside; separated and packaged donated materials for shipment to Haiti at New Jersey for Haiti in Elizabeth; and cleaned up the playground at the children’s facilities at the Salvation Army, Elizabeth Branch, in Elizabeth.
“As a Haitian-American it was great to have the opportunity to help the people of Haiti. I also got a chance to meet some passionate associates from other campuses who were just as excited as me to complete our assigned tasks,” said Berkeley College Career Counselor, Newark Campus, Jenny Baguidy, who served as team captain at New Jersey for Haiti in Elizabeth.
Throughout the day Berkeley College social media communicators Tweeted on a Community Service Day Twitter page. In addition, associates captured special moments via Flip camcorders and digital cameras that were then placed on Facebook and Flickr. Back in the classroom faculty will share their Community Service Day experiences with students.
Berkeley College Associates separated and packaged donated materials for shipment to Haiti at New Jersey for Haiti in Elizabeth during Community Service Day, June 11. The College closed all New Jersey and New York campuses and sent 530 faculty and staff to volunteer at 44 diverse community service organizations.
