CLARK—Super Stars Night at Arthur L. Johnson in early June honored Key Club members for their community service. That night, along with the retiring of the 2010 Key Club officers and the installing of the 2011 Key Club officers, certificates for service came with scholarships awarded by the parent organization, Kiwanis Club of Clark.
Kiwanis president Al MacDougall presented a silver service scholarship award of $250 to senior Kevin Walsh, the school’s valedictorian. Kiwanis President-Elect Bruce Gluck was on hand to assist in presenting the gold service scholarships of $350 which were given to Key Club President Isabelle Filiciello and Lt. Governor of the NJ District Key Club Lisa Hagen.
Additional special awards were given to seniors by the Kiwanis Club of Clark. The annual Bernie Yarusavage Memorial Scholarship of $250 was awarded to Hagen. Bernie Yarusavage was a longtime member of Clark Kiwanis and a three-term mayor in Clark.
A new award, the Dr. Alex Kowalenko Scholarship, was awarded to senior Jade Light for her “Key Club heart.” Dr. Kowalenko, who was the ALJ High School physician for years, has been a 50-year member of the adult philanthropic club. On his 80th birthday this last fall, the Kiwanis Club instituted the annual scholarship to honor his commitment to the children of Clark.

Johnson High School’s Super Stars Night that recognized the teen members’ dedication to community service.
