HIGHLAND PARK — Nighthawk Books, Highland Park’s go-to spot for used books, DVD rentals, and snacks for the mind and body, will make the borough part of an international literary celebration next week.
Wednesday, June 16, is Bloomsday — the day that fans of the Irish writer James Joyce celebrate his masterpiece, “Ulysses,” by reliving the adventures of the novel’s hero, Leo Bloom, whose travels through the streets of Dublin on June 16,1904 are the heart of the novel. In Dublin, Joyce fans literally follow in Bloom’s footsteps, aided by tour guides and signs. In other parts of the world, Joyceans stage marathon readings of the hefty novel.
Nighthawk Books will give its Bloomsday celebration a local twist by posting a video of borough poets and writers reading key passages from “Ulysses” at various Highland Park locations. Rick Black, John Marron, Pandora Scooter, and other noteworthy artists will merge their talents with Joyce’s epic accomplishment.
