WALDORF, Md. – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Newark Bears 4-1 on Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. The Blue Crabs took the series two games to one.
The Bears took an early lead in the third inning. Back-to-back singles by Gabe Suarez and Paddy Matera started the frame. Nook Logan brought in Suarez with a RBI single, the third straight hit off Jarrett Santos, and it was 1-0 Newark.
Southern Maryland struck back against Matt Smith in the home fifth as Kody Kirkland and Jeremy Owens blasted back-to-back shots to make it 2-1. A RBI single by Travis Garcia plated the third run of the inning and the advantage was two runs.
The Blue Crabs added another run in the sixth as Owens drilled his second straight homer and it was 4-1 Southern Maryland.
Santos (4-1) notched the victory, allowing the one run over seven innings, scattering seven hits, with a walk and two strikeouts. Smith suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits, with three walks and two strikeouts over four and one-third innings of work. Jim Ed Warden registered his ninth save as he worked a scoreless ninth.
Newark returns to the “Den” on Friday to kick-off an eight-game home stand and welcome the the Camden Riversharks. Game is set for 7:05 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 6:05 p.m.
