LAKEWOOD – The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored six runs in the first inning off BlueClaws starter Jonathan Pettibone, and Lakewood fell Sunday afternoon 6-2.
Pettibone (2-2) was making his first start since May 20th after missing time on the DL with right shoulder weakness. He registered just one out, getting rocked for six runs on five hits.
Greensboro (27-31) hit three home runs in the first, and their five hits in the innings matched their nine-inning total from a loss the day before.
The highlight of what was a long day for the Claws (33-25) came in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Villar stole home for the third time this season off Hoppers starter Jose Alvarez (5-1) to cut the deficit to five.
The BlueClaws managed just one more run off Alvarez when Jeremy Barnes singled home Jonathan Singleton in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game.
Alvarez was excellent through 6 1/3 innings for Greensboro, striking out eight and allowing just two runs on five hits.
The Lakewood bullpen put in a lot of quality work in relief of Pettibone. Ebelin Lugo held Greensboro scoreless through 4 2/3 innings, and Eric Massingham finished off the game giving up just a hit in a career long 4 innings.
Depending on how Hickory fares Sunday night the BlueClaws will be either one or two games back of first heading into Monday’s game. RHP Jarred Cosart (6-1, 3.38) faces RHP Curtis Peterson (2-5, 5.91) at 7:05 pm.
