BRIDGEWATER– The Newark Bears shutout the Somerset Patriots 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater.
For the third straight game, it was all about the pitchers as Bubba O’Donnell and Justin Jones matched each other stride for stride. The starters combined to allow just nine hits and stranded seven base runners over the first four scoreless innings.
Newark cracked the scoreboard first for the second time in the series. Two straight singles, including James Cooper’s RBI single, followed a one-out bunt single by Shawn Williams to start the fifth and it was 1-0 Bears. Kennard Jones brought home another run on a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run advantage.
The Bears extended the lead to four runs as they sent six batters to the plate in the top of the ninth. Williams, who finished the day 2-for-4, reached on a one-out single and was pushed over on Paddy Matera’s second sacrifice bunt of the game. Cooper, who went 3-for-5, plated Williams with a RBI double and came around to score on a wild pitch and an error to make it 4-0 Newark.
O’Donnell (3-1) didn’t allow an extra-base hit and saw just two batters reach third base on the afternoon. He fired eight scoreless innings, scattering seven singles, with five strikeouts. Jones (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, with a walk and four strikeouts over seven innings of work.
