Sen. Joseph Vitale

TRENTON – Last week in Trenton, Senator Joseph F. Vitale, the Vice Chair of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, received the 2010 AARP Legislative Leadership Award for his contributions to health care access and quality in New Jersey.

“It’s an honor to receive recognition from a group that has become one of the most vocal advocates for senior citizens in our State and across the country,” said Vitale, D-Middlesex.  “The fact that AARP cited my work in ensuring health care access and quality for all New Jerseyans – not just seniors – demonstrates the societal importance of decent, accessible medical care.  Health care access isn’t just a seniors issue, or a working poor issue, but an issue that everybody should be concerned with.”

Vitale was presented with a plaque at the AARP “Day at the Capital” on Thursday, May 20 at the Trenton Marriott.  The award cites his work in making health care accessible for all New Jerseyans, not just those who can afford decent health insurance.

“Whether you’re covered by a private health insurance policy or public health care coverage, everyone should be concerned about making health care more accessible and affordable for the uninsured,” said Vitale.  “The lack of health insurance in this country is a major cost-driver for those folks lucky enough to have health insurance, and it comes down to a moral responsibility to make sure people get the care they need, when they need it.  Pushing for accessible care is something I’d fight for regardless of the accolades, but when a group like AARP recognizes your efforts, it makes it all the more gratifying.”
