EDISON — A construction worker living in Ridgefield was arrested this morning on a charge of murder in the fatal stabbing of a 44-year-old Edison man on July 31, 2000, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Edison Police Chief Thomas J. Bryan announced.
Sin Ho Jeong, 54, was apprehended by members of the Fugitive Unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Edison Police Department, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ridgefield Police Department, according to authorities.
Jeong, who currently is known by the name of Jae Ho Jang, was charged on Aug. 1, 2000, with the murder of Du Ju Kim, 44, who was fatally stabbed outside his apartment on Hidden Valley Drive in Edison on July 31, 2000.
An autopsy performed by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Kim was the victim of multiple stab wounds.
Jeong’s whereabouts remained unknown until members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently developed information on the case and contacted authorities in Middlesex County.
As a result, authorities from the four police agencies arrested Jeong outside his home at 7:10 a.m. as he was leaving for work.
Jeong is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $2 million bail, which was set today by Superior Court Judge Frederick P. DeVesa. Bail initially was set at $500,000 on August 1, 2000, by Superior Court Judge Barnett E. Hoffman, who since has retired.
Jeong is scheduled to appear before Superior Court Judge Joseph Paone on May 25 at the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick.
Kaplan thanked the FBI, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ridgefield Police Department for their assistance.
Kaplan also cited extensive work on the case by Detective Lt. Anthony Marcantuono, Lt. John Spielman, Detective Sgt. Frank Todd, and Detective Brian Mieczkowski, all of the Edison Police Department; Sgt. Jacquelyn Molnar and now-retired Investigator Charles Gerndt, both of the Homicide Unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office; Sgt. Kevin Morton, Investigator Michael Connelly, Investigator Peter Pavlis and Investigator David Deliman, all of the Fugitive Unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and Detective Mark Bendul of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities are asking anyone with information on the case to call Lt. Marcantuono of the Edison Police Department at (732) 248-7400, or Sgt. Molnar of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-4578.
As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charge against Jeong is merely an accusation and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
