TRENTON— An ongoing project to create connections between I-78 and the Garden State Parkway at Interchange 142 will require the relocation of a crossover ramp on I-78 westbound from the Local lanes to Express lanes, as well as an extension of a lane closure on I-78 eastbound.

The changes affect a one-mile stretch of I-78 eastbound in Union and Hillside townships  from milepost 52.8 to milepost 53.8.

Beginning Friday night, May 21, the crossover ramp from I-78 westbound Local lanes to Express lanes at milepost 53 by the Garden State Parkway will be closed and temporarily relocated approximately 300 feet to the west.  The ramp relocation will require temporary lane closures on I-78 westbound over the weekend, and will be in place for approximately one month.  I-78 westbound motorists are encouraged to use the temporary crossover ramp from I-78 Local to Express at milepost 57 until the relocation of the crossover ramp at milepost 53 is complete.

Also, on or about June 4 NJDOT plans to extend the current closure of the two left-most lanes on I-78 eastbound Local 2,000 feet further to milepost 53.8.  Two lanes of I-78 eastbound Local will be maintained.  The entrance ramp from the GSP northbound will no longer enter into a dedicated acceleration lane, and will now feature a yield sign.  This traffic pattern is necessary to reconstruct pavement and make drainage improvements, and is expected to be in place for approximately 3 weeks.

Advance warning signs and permanent and portable Variable Message Signs will be used to assist motorists to safely navigate these changes.

The $125 million project, which includes the rehabilitation of I-78 local and express lanes in both directions, is expected to be completed by the end of 2011. It will provide congestion relief on local roadways, create more convenient travel patterns and improve safety and traffic flow.  NJDOT opened the new flyover ramp from the Garden State Parkway northbound to I-78 westbound last September. That new ramp provides direct access to I-78 westbound from the GSP northbound for the first time.

Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and follow any reduced speed signs in the construction zone.
