RAHWAY — Several people were arrested in January for underage drinking when six state Division of Criminal Justice agents raided a bar owned by the school board president.
School Board President Peter Kowal’s establishment, Butch Kowal’s at 950 St. George’s Avenue, was raided by state authorities shortly before midnight on Jan. 28.
Lt. Lisa Cawley of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, Alcoholic Beverage Control Board enforcement unit, issued summonses to Samantha Ciccone of Point Pleasant, Jessica Gould of Roselle and Michael Newman of Clark.Kasey Kesser, the bartender who allegedly served the underage drinkers, was also charged.
Rahway Police Officer Umberto Scaturro reported that the four suspects were cleared for outstanding arrest warrants and released from the scene without incident.
“I ran the three individuals for warrants, which came back negative,” said Scaturro. “The bartender who served the underaged drinkers, Kasey Kesser, was also charged for serving minors.”
Sixth Ward Councilman Samson Steinman, who works at the liquor store adjacent to Butch Kowal’s Tavern, downplayed the incident. Kesser could not be reached for comment.
Investigator Anthony Bowen and four state police detectives, Kevin Barber, Christopher Wegner, Max Henry and Ron Allen also particpated in the raid.
Rahway Police Officer Jeffrey Urban assisted the ABC enforcement unit with Scaturro, but no report was released to the media.
A police department source said details were kept quiet to avoid exposing Kowal, who is supporting the Regular Political Organization.
