MIDDLSEX COUNTY – Voters in Perth Amboy and Spotswood will choose municipal council members in today’s non-partisan election.

Eight candidates are running for three seats on Perth Amboy’s City Council: Kenneth Gonzalez, Maria Garcia and William Petrick are running together on a slate endorsed by Mayor Wilda Diaz. Leslie Dominguez-Rodriguez and Joel Pabon are running together on a separate slate, while Nephtaly Cardona, Robert McCoy and Richard Piatkowski are all running individually.

In Spotswood, four candidates are running for three Borough Council seats. Council President Curtis Stollen and current council members Margaret Drozd and Charles Spicuzzo are running for re-election, while the borough’s volunteer fire chief, Nicholas Poliseno, is hoping to win a spot on the council.

This will be the last time that Spotswood holds non-partisan elections in May for the foreseeable future. The borough has approved a plan to hold the election in conjunction with the state and federal elections in November beginning in 2012. The move is anticipated to save approximately $25,000 and increase voter turnout.

Perth Amboy failed to approve a similar measure moving the city’s non-partisan election date earlier this year.
