MIDDLESEX COUNTY – Middlesex County became one of the first counties in the state to put Federal Stimulus Funds to work when the Board of Chosen Freeholders voted to approve a contract to mill and resurface 17 of the busiest county roads.

The work will begin this summer and include the installation or improvement of 1,000 ADA ramps at intersections along the roadways to be improved. It is being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

More than 16.5 miles of roads will be resurfaced. Roads to be redone include: Oak Tree Road in Edison, Florida Grove Road in Woodbridge and Perth Amboy, Route 516 – Old Bridge-Matawan Road — in Old Bridge, Roosevelt Avenue in Carteret, and Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick.

“The stimulus funds are doing exactly what they were intended to do: They’re putting residents back to work,” said Freeholder Carol Barrett, chair of the county’s Engineering and Planning Committee.

The County Engineer’s Office estimated that the work would cost more than $8.1 million dollars. Fourteen bids, ranging from the low of $5.7 million to the high of $9.7 million were received, making this an extremely competitive process, Barrett said.

Barrett added: “I wish to thank County Engineer John Reiser and his department for taking an aggressive approach to bringing federal funds to Middlesex County. By doing so, we got our piece of the pie and are using it to improve the safety of our residents.
