UNION COUNTY – Rain barrels are a tried and true way to save money on water bills while keeping a healthy yard and garden all summer long. Now Union County residents can save money on the rain barrel, too.
The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Union County is offering a new “Build a Rain Barrel” workshop that includes putting together a full sized, easy-to-assemble rain barrel to take home. Rain barrels typically retail for about $100. The cost of the class, complete with the rain barrel, is only $45.
The Build a Rain Barrel workshop will be conducted on Wednesday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the Union County Trailside Nature and Science Center at the Watchung Reservation. Pre-registration and advance payment is required by May 21, by calling the extension offices at 1-908-654-9854. Class size is limited.
Without a rain barrel, runoff from roofs goes directly into gutters and storm drains, washing pollutants into local waterways. With a rain barrel, county residents can use that runoff in their yards, where it will percolate through the soil without affecting water quality in nearby streams and rivers.
