CLARK—Alex MacDougall, president of the Clark Kiwanis Club, has announced two new scholarships to be presented in June to deserving high school seniors. “We’re proud to recognize two Kiwanis members –one posthumously—for their work on behalf of the children of Clark, New Jersey and the world by establishing these scholarships,” he said.

The first scholarship honors Dr. Alex Kowalenko, the former ALJ High School doctor, who has been a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 50 years.

On Dr. Kowalenko’s 80th birthday, Clark Kiwanis treasurer Jay Taback announced the formation of a scholarship fund the Clark Kiwanis established in Dr. Kowalenko’s name.

“This is one of the ways we want to give recognition and appreciation that we feel due to this true humanitarian,” Taback said.

The second scholarship is a memorial fund to honor the late Roger Hartmuller who was a Clark Kiwanis member since the 1960s. “When Vera and Roger Hartmuller died this last year, we knew we wanted to recognize their contribution to the education of Clark students,”  MacDougall said.

Among their many accomplishments, the Hartmullers founded the Featherbed Lane School in Clark. Hartmuller was honored by the club in 2004 as the Clark Kiwanis’ “Man of the Year.”

The Clark Kiwanis Club invites the community to show their support to education and children by adding to these scholarship funds. To contribute, please send checks made payable to “Clark Kiwanis”, to Kiwanis Treasurer Jay Taback, 27 Briarheath Road, Clark, NJ 07066. Designate to which of the two funds—Kowalenko or Hartmuller—the money should be applied.
