LINDEN—Students in Suzanne Bramante’s first grade class at School No.8 worked on a How-To-Do writing unit. Reading Coach Linda Castaldo worked with Bramante and her class by reading How-to-Do Books of many different authors.

The class brainstormed about what they each knew how to do well and wrote their own books. The students had the freedom to write about the topics of their choice, which provided them for with greater opportunities to emerge as an author. They also created illustrations for different parts of their book.

The Publishing Celebration Day gave the first grade authors a chance to read their books for an audience. This was a way for students to experience the collaborative book publishing process. Each student’s book will document the ideas, thoughts and creativity as they emerge as writers from a young age. These writings will be cherished by parents and families as the child grows.
