CRANFORD—The Cranford Public Library and the Cranford Green Team will sponsor a screening of Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai on Tuesday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Avenue.
Taking Root tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy—a movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration. Admission to the program is free and all are welcome.
The film will be introduced by Gerri Steiner, a member of the Cranford Green Team. The Green Team is working toward achieving Cranford’s designation as a Sustainable Jersey™ community. Sustainable Jersey™ addresses issues such as global warming, pollution, biodiversity, land use, air and water quality, equity, buying local, local living economies, and sustainable agriculture. It recommends actions that municipalities can implement to become certified and be considered leaders on the path to sustainable communities.
