WOODBRIDGE – A burglary attempt was foiled Monday afternoon when an Avenel resident surprised the suspect and police apprehended him in the woods behind Avenel Middle School, according to authorities.
Joseph Volpe Jr., 50, of Newark has been charged with burglary and criminal mischief and was taken to Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick following his arrest, according to authorities.
The 41-year-old victim told police that she was in her basement when she heard the sound of something breaking. She went upstairs and saw a man attempting to pry open the screen on a rear window near the door, according to police.
As the would-be burglar bent the screen, the woman told him, “I see your face, I’m calling the police,” according to authorities. The suspect fled towards Avenel Street School and Avenel Middle School.
Officers arrested Volpe, who was hiding in the woods behind the middle school, authorities said. The victim identified him as the alleged burglar, police said.
