United Way Calls On Union County “Get Hands On” For National Volunteer Week

ELIZABETH – United Way of Greater Union County is promoting National Volunteer Week, April 18th- April 24.

National Volunteer Week celebrates ordinary people doing extraordinary things to improve their communities. United Way has planned and is offering a number of different volunteer opportunities for community-minded individuals who are also willing to inspire others in helping to address community needs.

“National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities,” says James W. Horne Jr., president & CEO of United Way of Greater Union County.  “It’s about demonstrating to the community that by working together, united, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals.”

Projects suitable for individuals and groups include the following:

Elizabeth
NJ4Haiti Warehouse
Help sort and pack cartons going to Haiti.
April 17, 11am-5pm

After School Program Aides at Jefferson Park Family Success Center
Provide support for after school tutoring activities.
April 19-22, 4-6pm

Salvation Army Lunch Program
Serve lunch to those in need.
April 22-24, 1-4pm

Plainfield (or at your location!)
American Red Cross Truck Cleaning
Keep the Red Cross Disaster Truck clean, it’s been a busy season!
April 19-23, Flexible Time

Summit
Summit Supports Our Troops Care Package Assembly
Learn more about this great group in Summit while preparing care packages for our troops.
April 21, 10am-2pm

Cranford
Cranford’s Big Dig- Walnut Avenue School
Get your hands in the dirt preparing the 2010 food garden beds and cleaning up the rain garden.
April 24, 9am-12pm

Westfield
Westfield Community Food Drive
Drop off food donations at:

Baby Supplies Drive
Drop off new baby clothes, diapers and formula at Hilltop Bank during Lobby Hours.
