LINDEN – A Rahway man faces charges after police discovered a stolen handgun during a Sunday night traffic stop, authorities said.

On April 11, police clocked a 2005 Acura driven by Darius Xavier El Bey doing 43 MPH in a 25 MPH zone on West Elizabeth Avenue at 11:06 p.m., authorities said. After the car was stopped, police determined that El Bey, 37, was wanted on contempt charges from Newark, Hillside and Maplewood.

Officer Javier Perez checked the glove compartment for ownership papers because the vehicle was not registered to El Bey, authorities said. Perez discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun, model 915, in the glove box, according to police. A check of the gun’s serial number revealed it was stolen from Maplewood in August of 2006, police said.

El Bey was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and receiving stolen property. Bail was set at $35,000 cash, pending an April 19 court date in Union County, police said.
