Rahway Man Charged With DWI In Fatal Accident

RAHWAY—A motorcyclist was killed in a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of St. Georges and Linden avenues just after midnight today, police said.

William Hawkins, 38, of Rahway was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, police said.

Joseph Rieger, 42, of Linden sustained fatal internal injuries in the crash and died at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, according to police.

The crash took place at approximately 12:38 a.m. this morning. According to police, the preliminary investigation determined that a 2005 BMW motorcycle operated by Rieger was traveling north in the right lane on St. Georges Avenue when it was struck by a 1999 Ford Expedition driven by Hawkins that was traveling south on St. Georges Avenue and making a left turn onto Linden Avenue.

Traffic on St. Georges Avenue was limited to one lane north and one lane south for approximately seven hours while police investigated the crash, authorities said.

The investigation is still on-going, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Rahway Police Department Traffic Bureau at 1-732-827-2073.
