LINDEN – Police charged a 21-year-old Elizabeth man with stealing a purse from an 86-year-old Rahway woman at the Family Dollar store on East St. Georges Avenue last Friday, authorities said.

Daniel Bailey was charged with theft, according to police.

Just before noon on March 26, officers were sent to the store to investigate the reported purse snatching. A 39-year-old Elizabeth woman told officers that she saw a black man wearing a leather jacket and hooded sweatshirt grab a pocketbook out of a shopping cart and run off on foot east on East St. Georges Avenue.

Officers William Knapp and Charles Gallo, who were in an unmarked patrol car on North Park Avenue, saw a suspect matching the description and stopped him. The witness made a positive identification, police said. The pocketbook was recovered without $193 in cash that it held at the time of the theft, police said.

Bailey was being held on $10,000 cash bail at the Union County Jail in Elizabeth, authorities said.
