WOODBRIDGE—Authorities are actively investigating the death of an 82-year-old man, who was beaten and robbed in his home in the Fords section of the township, Middlesex County First Assistant Prosecutor Julia McClure and Woodbridge Police Chief William Trenery announced today.
James A. Clement was pronounced dead in his home at 8:36 p.m. on March 25 after police went to the house to check on him, according to officials.
Police were dispatched to Clement’s single-family house on the 600 block of King Georges Post Road in Fords after an unidentified friend of the victim called police at 7:12 p.m., concerned about being unable to contact him during the day.
An autopsy performed today by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office showed that Clement died from multiple blunt force injuries and that the death was a homicide, officials said.
An investigation by Detective Tim Laughery of the Woodbridge Police Department and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Officer determined that Clement was robbed during the homicide, officials said.
Clement, who lived alone, was found dead on the floor of his home. The investigation has yet to determine whether the incident was a random act, officials said.
Authorities ask anyone with information about the crime to call Detective Laughery of the Woodbridge Police Department at 1-732-634-7700, or Investigator Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-732-745-4471.
