PERTH AMBOY – One of nine potential candidates for Perth Amboy’s City Council has until Wednesday to correct deficiencies with the signatures on the petition he filed.
City Clerk Elaine Jasko determined that only 174 of the 284 signatures on Reyes Ortega’s petition were valid. Each candidate is required to submit a petition with at least 221 valid signatures of registered voters to appear on the ballot.
Ortega can correct the deficiencies – such as the names not being legible – but he can’t collect additional signatures.
Ortega, the city’s Republican Party chairman, plans to run for one of three open City Council seats in the non-partisan election on Tuesday, May 11.
Also running are Kenneth Gonzalez, Maria Garcia and William Petrick, who are running together on a slate, Nephtaly Cardona, Leslie Dominguez-Rodriguez, Robert McCoy, Joel Pabon and Richard Piatkowski.
