EDISON—Dr. Suresh Mody of Edison, a member of the Board of Trustees at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison and the Chairman of Radiology at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, offered a special lecture and PowerPoint presentation on MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging) to Dr. Lloyd Kunar’s Introduction to Medical Physics students on March 15.

Dr. Mody showed the students an array of MRI images, detailing the brain, liver, kidneys, knees and other organs. Through the PowerPoint pictures, their knowledge of medical physics, and the thorough explanation by Dr. Mody, the students were able to determine different types of MRI images, including T1, T2 and Proton Density.

Dr. Mody, who also fielded questions from the juniors and seniors during his presentation, detailed how a radiologist should read MRIs in order to properly diagnose a patient’s ailments and, optimally, lead them on a path to recovery.

Dr. Mody explained that the field of radiology focuses on “reading” and “real estate, real estate…” Radiologists must commit themselves to a thorough reading of MRIs to make the right diagnosis. By “real estate, real estate,” Dr. Mody compared reading an MRI to looking for a new home. First, one must locate the property (or the “problem” in the case of a radiologist). Next, one must determine the characteristics of the property he/she is looking for (or the characteristics of the issues found on the MRI in the cast of a radiologist).

The students learned that, in order to become a radiologist, a strong knowledge of physics is required and a commitment to ones studies. Dr. Mody is Certified by the American Board of Radiology. He holds a master’s degree in radio-diagnosis and radiology from The University of Gujarat, India, and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) from the University of Gujarat.

In September of 2008, Dr. Mody hosted students in Dr. Kunar’s Introduction to Medical Physics class at St. Michael’s Medical Center where they observed first-hand how radiological procedures are performed and to tour the hospital’s radiology department.
